Brexit Negotiations Update

July 2020

The UK and European Union have less than six months left to negotiate a comprehensive future relationship with the UK leaving the EU on 31 December 2020. Despite an improved tone – some progress made on key issues and the readiness to compromise, there remains differences in some areas such as level playing field provisions, governances and fisheries.

In our latest Santander Brexit Webinar, George Bridges (Lord Bridges of Headley)-  former Brexit Minister and Peter Foster - Public Policy Editor for The Financial Times spoke to us in their personal capacity on the latest developments on the negotiations.  They discussed the current UK political context of the negotiations, the Government’s preparations and its support to SME support. More specifically, they touched on how Brexit will result in new frictions and costs for the UK companies trading with Europe and the impact on UK Sectors namely Manufacturing, Food and Drink and Pharmaceuticals.

John Carroll, Head of International & Transaction Banking concluded the webinar by sharing how Santander is supporting our clients in getting ready for these new arrangements, as well as identifying new opportunities in markets outside Europe.
