Passionate about exports? Looking to make maximum impact? Are you on the right path? Join us for this exclusive webinar to help you expand your horizons and maximise your potential as we look at practical ways of approaching business in overseas markets.

  • Date: 27 September 2023
  • Time: 11:00 to 12:00 (BST)

Together with our speakers – Martin Newman, a leading authority on customer centricity and customer experience, and Martin Oxley, distinguished for his expertise in doing business in Central Europe – we’ll be looking at some pragmatic ways of approaching business in international markets, including an overview of possible internationalisation strategies and how our providers can support you in your company’s expansion to Europe.

In the latest edition of our biannual Santander Trade Barometer report, the results showed that 59% of businesses that trade internationally reported improved performance over the past year, compared to just 46% of those that do business solely in the UK. What’s more, 38% of businesses say that international growth – in new and existing markets – will be a key driver of recovery but that the greatest operational challenge for these internationally-ambitious businesses is finding trustworthy partners, connections, and customers.  So, how do you do it successfully? Which market should be next on your agenda and where do you even start? Surprisingly, the answer is much closer to home – to be successful globally, you need to be effective locally.

We all know that when it comes to international growth, it isn’t one-size-fits-all. So, whether you’re selling to consumers directly or business to business, it’s important to understand that when you embark upon your international journey you think through the needs of different customers in different markets. What’s important in the UK may not be in Germany, Italy, or other European markets, while there will be other criteria that will be more important to customers in these markets. As Confucius said, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for successful growth it’s vital that that step is in the right direction. To this end, you must ensure that there’s a definable opportunity for your business in the market you want to enter and understand what you need to do to be successful – both in meeting local customer needs and navigating a foreign competitive landscape. Martin Newman is a global customer experience expert, helping businesses to connect more effectively with customers by understanding their needs and delivering more relevant experiences. His presentation will help to address the challenges outlined above. In Martin’s presentation, he will share his customer centricity framework that will help you to ensure you meet the needs of customers in different markets.

With customer centricity right at the core of market success, our second speaker, Martin Oxley, will look at some practical tips for doing business in international markets. What type of business relationship are you looking to establish? How are you going to reach your customers? Are you set up to deliver? The future of international trade is much more than exporting products to overseas markets, it involves meeting new people, understanding what they’re looking for, and defining an attractive proposition. Customer care is a vital ingredient in building long-term business relationships, whether B2B or B2C, and you will need to build an ecosystem of providers who will support your growth by fostering strong partnerships. Having spent his career living and working in Europe and in his current role as Chair of a retail solutions company, Martin is well-placed to help both large and small companies build this network and advise on their international growth journey.
